– Director’s Notes: February 2019 –

February greetings to all of our PCMA families, friends, and students. Because of the popular Valentines day holiday this month, our thoughts frequently turn to the loved ones in our lives, and also to our own inner thoughts about the strength of our emotions and our commitments. Why not dream up some new ways to show our esteem and value to one another? Let me encourage you to get creative with your loving expressions! Write a note or even compose a special poem or song for someone dear. Of course, you could also plan dinner and a show!

Remember part of the reason we learn music is so that we can express the feelings that are sometimes too deep for words. Words are great, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes the underlying strength of our souls can be expressed more fully by a wordless, passionate melody! For example, listen to Tchaikovsky‘s Fifth Symphony, 2nd movement, which our symphony students will be playing at McIntyre Hall on March 23! More examples of emotions expressed in music: tenderness (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata), grace, forgiveness (the Countess’s final aria in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro!), grief over a loved one’s passing (Grieg Funeral March), passionate commitment (Puccini’s Nessun Dorma), etc… I know you can think of hundreds more!

Why not share meaningful music during this month,  when we celebrate the warmest thoughts and relationships that make our lives worth living?

Creatively Yours,
Sharyn Peterson
Artistic/Executive Director
